If you are a:
-
landed immigrant/permanent resident
-
refugee claimant
-
new Canadian citizen
-
newcomer to Canada on a work authorization,
or
-
visiting scholar, researcher, or post-doctoral fellow at the
University of Saskatchewan,
the following services are available to you:
Coffee and Conversation
Thursday afternoons from 1:00 – 4:00 p.m.
Newcomers and volunteers meet informally over a cup of coffee. This
relaxed environment provides an ideal setting for newcomers to learn
more about Canadian culture and traditions, and to develop mutual
friendships.
English as a Second Language (ESL)
Many
immigrants and refugees experience difficulty expressing themselves
orally and in writing. Our ESL program is designed to help newcomers
gain a better understanding of and facility in English. The ESL
program is focused on reading, writing, listening and speaking.
Our qualified instructors are keen to help! We
offer formal classes as well as opportunities for one-on-one
tutoring. Students actively participate in this learning process by
sharing their cultural experiences in the classroom.
Parents are encouraged to bring their children
(ages 4-12) to the Monday and Wednesday evening classes. Supervised
children’s activities are provided during evening class time.
ESL schedule
Monday 7 p.m. - 9 p.m.
Wednesday 7 p.m. - 9 p.m.
Thursday 10 a.m. – 12 p.m.
For registration information, please contact the
Global Gathering Place office at 665-0268.
Women's program
Our
women’s group meets weekly to take part in a variety of activities
designed to empower and educate participants. The program encourages
women to build positive futures through self-awareness, personal
growth, skill development, and through the creation of support
networks with other immigrant and refugee women.
Tuesday Evening Presentations
On
Tuesday evenings, speakers from different agencies provide
information about services available in the community. This program
is designed to make Saskatoon more familiar and accessible to
newcomers by linking them with the resources they require. As a
result, we hope to encourage and support people of all cultures to
more fully participate in community life.
Sunday Program
Our Sunday afternoon program is family-oriented. Family members make
new friendships and discover new places in and around the city by
participating in a variety of cultural and recreational activities.
Some of our past events have included: visits to museums and
festivals, lake excursions, and sports activities such as bowling,
curling, and outdoor skating! |
